The charitable remainder unitrust, as it is known, is one of several strategies Romney has adopted over his career to reduce his tax bill. While Romney’s tax avoidance is legal and common among high-net-worth individuals, it has become an issue in the campaign. President Barack Obama attacked him in their second debate for paying “lower tax rates than somebody who makes a lot less.”
In this instance, Romney used the tax-exempt status of a charity — the Mormon Church, according to a 2007 filing — to defer taxes for more than 15 years. At the same time he is benefiting, the trust will probably leave the church with less than what current law requires, according to tax returns obtained by Bloomberg this month through a Freedom of Information Act request.
In general, charities don’t owe capital gains taxes when they sell assets for a profit. Trusts like Romney’s permit funders to benefit from that tax-free treatment.

So this seems kind of important.

As we left the Oval Office, executive editor Eric Bates told Obama that he had asked his six-year-old if there was anything she wanted him to say to the president. … [S]he said, ‘Tell him: You can do it.’ Obama grinned. … ‘You know, kids have good instincts,’ Obama offered. ‘They look at the other guy and say, “Well, that’s a bullshitter, I can tell.”

Eternal emergency.

This is why the “disillusioned Obama voter” is a real thing that understandably rightfully exists. BECAUSE THIS SHIT IS GODDAMNED RIDICULOUS.

Listen, I’m glad I have a president who supports marriage equality and expanding healthcare coverage and a woman’s right to choose and even “the redistribution of wealth.” But I wish he wasn’t the same guy who failed to chose not to close Guantanamo and who expands domestic surveillance across the board and kills American citizens overseas with drones and re-ups on an eleven year old state of emergency.

I voted for him once, and I’ll do so again, because I believe there is a definite, clear choice when it comes to the social and economic issues we face as a nation. But let’s not kid ourselves — party lines have gotten pretty blurry when it comes to the war on terror and “matters of national security.” And increasingly, it seems as though even hoping for change on these issues has become a long shot.

Romney Says He Supports Popular Obamacare Provisions On NBC, Quietly Reverses Hours Later On Conservative Website | ThinkProgress ⇢

This morning on NBC, Mitt Romney said that “there are a number of things that I like” about Obamacare and suggested he would retain: 1. The guarantee that insurance companies couldn’t discriminate against people with pre-exisiting conditions, and 2. The provision that allows young adults to stay on their parents plan.

Just hours later, his campaign quietly told a conservative website that he actually opposes those provisions of Obamacare.

And this tells you just about all you need to know about Mitt.

Warning: If you have a heart condition, or are pregnant, you should not watch. Not because of the excitement, but because you probably won’t like the Republican position on healthcare and reproductive rights.
